RABAT: Bulgaria has expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a basis for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue, describing genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a viable solution.

The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued after a telephone conversation between Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

According to the communiqué, Bulgaria, in light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, considers that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could provide a viable solution to the dispute. It also reaffirmed that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative is a serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement.

The statement reflects growing bilateral cooperation between Morocco and Bulgaria and underscores continued international support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
