ATHENS: Greece has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal for the Moroccan Sahara, describing it as a serious and credible contribution to the United Nations-led process and saying it could represent the “most feasible solution” to the regional dispute.
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis made the remarks following a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Athens.
Gerapetritis said Greece supports UN efforts, in line with the European Union’s position, to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable settlement based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal.
He also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that Greece’s position reflects its role as a non-permanent Security Council member for the 2025–2026 term.
The Greek position further reinforces growing European support for resolving the Moroccan Sahara dispute through an autonomy arrangement under Moroccan sovereignty.
