PESHAWAR : Pakistan Railways’ Peshawar Division has initiated efforts to expand freight operations through collaboration with Cherat Cement Factory, exploring the transportation of coal from Karachi Port to the factory and cement to major cities across the country.

A delegation comprising Major (Retd.) Arshad and Wahid Islam Afridi met Divisional Superintendent Pakistan Railways Peshawar, Imran Hayat, to discuss the proposed arrangement and explore opportunities for cooperation in rail-based freight transportation.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the use of existing railway infrastructure to transport industrial raw materials and finished products, with a focus on improving efficiency and reducing transportation costs.

Imran Hayat said Pakistan Railways was working to expand freight services and strengthen cooperation with the industrial sector. He added that partnerships with industrial enterprises could boost railway revenue, facilitate trade and support economic growth.

The proposed arrangement could also reduce pressure on highways by shifting bulk cargo from road to rail, offering businesses an alternative for transporting coal and cement.

Both sides agreed to examine the technical, administrative and commercial feasibility of the proposed operation in line with Cherat Cement Factory’s requirements.

The initiative is part of Pakistan Railways’ broader efforts, under the vision of Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, to attract private-sector participation, strengthen freight services and enhance the railway’s role in supporting industrial growth and the national economy.
