Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, held a detailed meeting with a delegation of bureau chiefs and reporters from Sindh stationed in Islamabad at the BISP headquarters on Tuesday.

During the interaction, the journalist community congratulated Senator Rubina Khalid on her election to the Senate for the third time. Addressing the delegation, the Chairperson announced that BISP is set to launch a pilot phase of its new “Sahulat Accounts” initiative from August 13 in seven major districts of the country. Through this initiative, deserving women will be able to open direct bank accounts and receive financial assistance from the bank of their choice, eliminating the need for intermediaries.

She further added that a digital wallet-based payment model has already been introduced to simplify disbursements. Simultaneously, consultations with Pakistan Post are underway to further enhance e-payment services for beneficiaries.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, President Asif Ali Zardari recently inaugurated the Benazir Hunarmand Program, aimed at equipping BISP beneficiary families with technical skills. Senator Rubina Khalid shared that over 10,000 people have registered through the online portal, with women accounting for the majority. The program is being supported by NAVTTC, TEVTAs, the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, and international partners under the “Friends of BISP” platform.

The Chairperson highlighted key features of the program, including the recognition of housewives as heads of households and the requirement of CNICs for registration—reforms credited to President Zardari. She added that BISP currently supports nearly 10 million families nationwide.

Senator Rubina Khalid also spoke about the Benazir Development Program, which focuses on the health and nutrition of pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under two years of age. She reported a 6.5% reduction in child stunting due to targeted nutrition interventions.

Under the Benazir Education Scholarships, financial assistance is being provided from primary to higher secondary levels, with conditions of school enrollment and at least 70% attendance. She noted that some beneficiaries from Multan recently secured top positions in matriculation exams.

For registration, Senator Khalid explained that BISP has shifted from house-to-house surveys to establishing Dynamic Registry Centers at the tehsil level. A mandatory re-survey is required for beneficiaries enrolled for more than three years. She reiterated that BISP does not charge any fee for surveys and has no physical survey forms.

She concluded by stressing the importance of educating deserving women about their rights and assured that complaints received through media channels are promptly addressed.
