PESHAWAR: Khyber Medical University (KMU) held its 7th Convocation in Peshawar, where graduates were urged to take a leading role in shaping the future of healthcare through service, research, and professional excellence.

Provincial Minister for Health Khaliq-ur-Rehman, who also serves as Pro-Chancellor of KMU, addressed the ceremony as Chief Guest. He stated that the provincial government is implementing comprehensive health reforms aligned with the vision of Imran Khan. He remarked that the convocation symbolized not only the conferral of degrees but also the culmination of years of dedication, resilience, and academic rigor by students and faculty alike.

The ceremony was attended by Chairman Board of Governors Lady Reading Hospital Professor Dr. Nowsherwan Burki as Guest of Honour. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Zia ul Haq, Registrar Inam Ullah Wazir, members of the Senate and Syndicate, deans, faculty, parents, and a large number of students were also present.

Addressing graduates, the Health Minister emphasized that they were entering professional life with the responsibility of safeguarding human health and hope. He underscored that medicine is not merely a profession but a sacred service requiring compassion, ethical conduct, and commitment to innovation and evidence-based practice. He congratulated parents for their sacrifices and acknowledged teachers for shaping the character and integrity of students.

He highlighted KMU’s transformation into a symbol of academic and research excellence in the province, producing healthcare professionals serving nationally and internationally. He noted that research, high academic standards, and evidence-based medicine are now hallmarks of the university, strengthening the province’s healthcare system.

Professor Dr. Nowsherwan Burki stated that the convocation marked the beginning of a new journey for graduates, encouraging them to pursue careers in medical education and research, particularly within underserved regions. He stressed that true success lies in service to humanity rather than material wealth.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Zia ul Haq credited KMU’s achievements over the past nineteen years to visionary leadership, institutional stability, and teamwork. He noted progress across medical, dental, public health, pharmacy, nursing, DPT, and allied sciences programs. With 75 PhD faculty members, KMU continues to strengthen its research capacity and aims, in collaboration with Lady Reading Hospital, to establish a model medical college meeting international standards.

During the ceremony, Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Professor Dr. Nowsherwan Burki; former Principal of Khyber Medical College Professor Dr. Ijaz Hassan Khan; Planning Commission member Dr. Najeebullah; Chairman Social Health Protection Initiative KP Dr. Riaz Tanoli; and Principal KMU Institute of Medical Sciences Professor Dr. Musarrat Jabeen.

A total of 30 undergraduate and 33 postgraduate students received gold medals. Degrees including PhD, MPhil, Master’s, and BS were awarded to 718 undergraduate and 217 postgraduate students, marking a significant milestone in KMU’s continued contribution to healthcare education and research.
