PESHAWAR: An online event was organized by Niaz Adabi Sangar in connection with International Mother Language Day, expressing profound respect for all mother tongues of the world and reaffirming its commitment to the promotion and development of the Pashto language.

The event was held on 21 February under the chairmanship of Professor Aseer Mangal. It was attended by Patron of Niaz Adabi Sangar Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr. Kazim Niaz, Vice Chairman Professor Dr. Hanif Khalil, Vice Chairman (Second) Professor Dr. Gulzar Jalal Yousafzai, members of the cabinet, and representatives from the Culture Wing and Art Section.

Dr. Kazim Niaz stated that Niaz Adabi Sangar regards all mother languages with deep respect and continues to take practical measures for the growth, promotion, expansion, and development of Pashto language, Pashtun culture, art, and heritage. He emphasized that sustained government-level support is essential for the institutional strengthening and proper nurturing of Pashto.

He further observed that Pashto poets, writers, intellectuals, artists, and performers serve not only their mother tongue but also society at large by highlighting social issues and presenting constructive solutions through literature and art. Throughout history, he added, people of the pen have produced literature grounded in humanity and love.

Chairman Professor Aseer Mangal remarked that Niaz Adabi Sangar has consistently worked for the advancement of Pashto language and literature. Referring to 21 February as International Mother Language Day, he said that the day serves as a pledge not only to speak and read Pashto but also to cultivate the habit of writing it, since languages endure by becoming part of documented history. He urged the government to implement the five regional languages declared compulsory in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in both public and private educational institutions.

Vice Chairman Professor Dr. Hanif Khalil highlighted the historical background of the day, noting that UNESCO designated 21 February as International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide. He stated that Pashto is one of the major languages of the world with a rich literary tradition. Just as a mother holds a sacred place, he said, so too does one’s mother tongue; therefore, Pashto deserves full institutional backing, research centers, and comprehensive academic attention in literature, culture, and history.

Vice Chairman (Second) Professor Dr. Gulzar Jalal emphasized that every language, including Pashto, must be accorded dignity and recognition in accordance with United Nations principles. He noted that Pashto is spoken by millions and possesses a distinct cultural and historical identity. Citing recent linguistic data, he stated that Pashto is the second-largest language in Pakistan after Punjabi. He called for enhanced promotion of education, history, and literature in Pashto in line with the cultural and linguistic rights of the Pashtun people.

At the conclusion of the online session, participants reaffirmed their collective commitment to safeguarding and promoting mother languages particularly Pashto through coordinated and sustained efforts.
