KARACHI: At the annual meeting of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), veteran journalist Kazim Khan was re-elected unopposed as President.

Ayaz Khan was elected Senior Vice President, Ghulam Nabi Chandio Secretary General, and Tanveer Shaukat Deputy Secretary General. Other office bearers include Arif Baloch (Finance Secretary), Munza Saham (Information Secretary), and regional vice presidents from Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

The Standing Committee and joint secretaries were also announced, representing all provinces and regions, reflecting broad-based representation of the organization.

The election process was supervised by Election Committee Chairman Ali Raza Lehri, who congratulated the newly elected leadership. The Arbitration Committee was chaired by Hassan Abbas.

The annual general meeting discussed key challenges facing the media industry, including the future of print media, the rapid rise of digital platforms, and ongoing financial constraints due to reduced government advertising.

Addressing the meeting on World Press Freedom Day context, President Kazim Khan emphasized resistance against fake news, unethical journalism, and politically influenced narratives, stating that journalism must uphold credibility and integrity.

Participants stressed that despite digital growth, print media remains a trusted source of verified information. Concerns were raised over declining advertisement revenues, especially affecting regional newspapers, and demanded fair distribution of government ads, financial support, and a clear media policy framework.

The house also recommended stronger digital transformation under CPNE, improved technological integration, and institutional reforms to strengthen journalism standards and combat misinformation.

A condolence reference was held in memory of former CPNE Secretary General Amir Mahmood, where his contributions to press freedom were widely acknowledged.

At the conclusion, President Kazim Khan and Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio thanked all members and appreciated the efforts of the CPNE Secretariat staff.
