National Junior Championship Peshawar 2026 begins with colourful ceremony

PESHAWAR: The National Junior Championship Peshawar 2026, organized by the Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, commenced with great enthusiasm and grandeur. Provincial Minister for Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest. On this occasion, Provincial Minister Shafi Jan and Advisor for Sports Taj Muhammad Tarand formally inaugurated the sports competitions.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Provincial Minister for Information Shafi Jan said that today marks a historic day for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as young athletes from various departments of the province as well as from other provinces of the country are participating in this event. He stated that competitions in six different sports are being organized during the championship, while female athletes are actively participating in five sports disciplines,
reflecting increasing opportunities and representation for women in sports.

He said that sports are not merely about winning and losing but also teach discipline, resilience, sportsmanship, and the ability to learn from mistakes. Athletes who analyze their performance and learn from their weaknesses emerge stronger and continue to progress.

Shafi Jan stated that competitions in various sports including squash, badminton, and volleyball are being held during the championship and expressed hope that all athletes would demonstrate outstanding talent and competitive spirit.

He further said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has previously hosted numerous successful national-level sporting events and cited the successful organization of the National T20 Tournament at Imran Khan Cricket Stadium a few months ago as a clear example.

He also appreciated the Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for making excellent arrangements for the opening ceremony.
The Provincial Minister for Information said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government is taking practical measures to promote sports and engage youth in positive activities. The provincial government has also ensured sports competitions at various levels for madrassas, women, youth, and minority communities to provide equal opportunities to all segments of society.

He added that under the vision of Founding Chairman Imran Khan and the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, the provincial government continues to take robust measures for the development of sports, provision of modern facilities, and promotion of young talent at the national level.

Shafi Jan expressed hope that the National Junior Championship would not only help polish the abilities of young athletes but would also become a significant milestone in promoting sports and projecting a positive image of Pakistan.

Later, he also distributed prizes among Khyber Pakhtunkhwa athletes who delivered outstanding performances in the Asian Junior Championship.
