MARDAN: Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) won the Independence cricket match against the Mardan Press Club, while the Press Club team emerged victorious in the tug-of-war competition held as part of a three-day Independence Sports Gala organised by the Mardan Press Club.
The cricket match was played at the university’s Garden Campus and witnessed an exciting contest between the two sides. AWKUM clinched the trophy after putting up an impressive performance.
The university team was led by Director Transport Haji Ibrar Khan Umarzai, while the Mardan Press Club side was captained by senior journalist and General Secretary Hidayat-ur-Rehman Hoti. Players from both teams displayed good sporting skills during the match.
In the tug-of-war competition, the Mardan Press Club team secured a convincing victory and won the trophy. Senior journalists, including M. Bashir Adil and Shamsul Haq Yousafzai, also actively participated in the sporting events.
In the bedmenton competitions, Hidayat-ur-Rehman Hoti and Daniyal Shams emerged victorious after defeating their opponents in closely contested matches. In the first round, Mohammad Arif, Imad, Bakht Mohammad and Mohammad Asi faced defeat. In the final, Hoti and Daniyal defeated last year’s winning pair, Shehab Akbar and Khursheed Wahab, after a thrilling contest to claim the trophy.
The AWKUM administration warmly welcomed the journalists from the Mardan Press Club. The reception was led by security in-charge Pappu Khan.
At the concluding ceremony, Director Sports Muhammad Farooq Khan, Director ORIC Dr Tariq Mahmood, Professor Dr Muhammad Idrees, Professor Fazal Sattar and senior journalist Musarrat Khan Asi distributed prizes and trophies among the successful players. Special award was presented to former director of Information Department on his retirement from government services.
Young businessman Mohammad Amir, who is based in Spain, also attended the event as a special guest.
The speakers said organising sports competitions provided journalists, students and people from different sections of society with opportunities for healthy activities and played an important role in promoting social interaction, positive engagement and a healthy environment.
The university administration also hosted a dinner in honour of the Mardan Press Club team at the conclusion of the event.
