UNITED NATIONS (NEW YORK): The Republic of Mauritius has revised its position on the Moroccan Sahara issue, considering autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty the “most credible solution” to the regional dispute.
The new position was announced by Mauritius’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Dhananjay Ramful, during talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Ramful said Mauritius had recently reviewed its position on the Moroccan Sahara issue during a Cabinet meeting following the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
He said Mauritius considers the resolution pragmatic and recognizes that autonomy under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco offers the most realistic, fairest and most sustainable solution to the dispute.
The revised position comes amid growing diplomatic momentum behind Morocco’s Autonomy Plan under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
