UNITED NATIONS (NEW YORK): Jamaica has welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, acknowledging that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute the most feasible solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
The position was expressed by Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, during talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, Johnson Smith welcomed the resolution, which expresses full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations based on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.
The communiqué also congratulated the Kingdom of Morocco on its diplomatic efforts to build international consensus and momentum in favour of the Autonomy Plan under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
During the talks, Bourita and Johnson Smith agreed to continue political consultations between Morocco and Jamaica and coordinate their positions on matters of mutual interest.
