PESHAWAR : The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), in partnership with the European Union (EU) through Agence Française de Développement (AFD) as the lead partner, successfully concluded the Community Development Program (CDP) component of the 2nd Warsak Rehabilitation Project. The closing event was held at the Gara Tajik Hospital, Peshawar, marking a significant milestone in the project’s mission to integrate infrastructure advancement with community upliftment.
The Warsak 2nd Rehabilitation Project was designed as a comprehensive initiative—modernizing the aging infrastructure of the Warsak Hydropower Station while improving the living standards of the surrounding communities. In addition to critical engineering works such as sediment management systems, modernization of mechanical workshops, and flood mitigation measures, the project prioritized community welfare through a robust CDP.
A key focus of the CDP was Gara Tajik Hospital, where multiple interventions have significantly improved healthcare delivery for the local population. These interventions included:
•Provision of advanced medical equipment to strengthen diagnostic and emergency care services.
•Construction of a medical warehouse for efficient storage and inventory management.
•Solarization of the hospital to ensure uninterrupted energy supply and energy efficiency, alongside the provision of a diesel generator.
These upgrades have resulted in a noticeable improvement in patient care, with a marked increase in OPD patients reflecting growing trust in local healthcare services. Speaking at the event, Dr. Irum Qayum, Medical Superintendent (MS) of Gara Tajik Hospital, said,
“The facilities provided through the EU Grant have transformed healthcare services in our hospital, allowing us to cater to more patients and deliver improved medical care to the community.”
The event was organized by the WAPDA Warsak team led by Mr. Hameed Ullah Khan, Chief Engineer/Project Director, along with Mr. Muhammad Idrees, Project Engineer, and Mr. Shahid Nazir, Executive Engineer (Civil), highlighting the lasting impact of the EU Grant on the local population’s quality of life.
Healthcare professionals, hospital staff, and community members attended the ceremony, collectively recognizing the far-reaching socio-economic benefits of combining hydropower development with community investment.
The 2nd Warsak Rehabilitation Project exemplifies WAPDA’s and the EU’s shared commitment to inclusive development strengthening Pakistan’s energy infrastructure while fostering sustainable, resilient communities.
