DIKHAN: Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Zulfiqar Hameed, undertook an official visit to Dera Ismail Khan on Monday to review regional security operations and police infrastructure development.
The IGP began his visit with a high-level security briefing at the Chehkaan Fort, where he was joined by General Officer Commanding (GOC) 40 Division, Major General Neknam Muhammad Baig. The meeting focused on prevailing security challenges in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and Lakki Marwat districts. The GOC outlined the details of ongoing joint operations between police and security forces in the region.
Addressing the gathering, IGP Hameed underscored the need for enhanced coordination in counterterrorism operations. “Improving police operational capacity, upgrading infrastructure, and equipping the force with modern weaponry are among my foremost priorities,” he stated.
Later, accompanied by Regional Police Officer (RPO) Syed Ashfaq Anwar, the IGP inaugurated a newly constructed Police Driving School in the city. Upon arrival, he was presented a guard of honour. Touring the facility, he was briefed on its training modules which aim to improve road safety awareness and assist citizens in acquiring driving licenses.
The IGP announced the upcoming installation of a virtual simulator at the school to modernize training standards. “This institution will offer equal training opportunities to both men and women, ensuring adherence to road safety laws,” he remarked. He also distributed commendation certificates among police personnel for exemplary performance.
In another engagement, the provincial police chief visited Ejaz Shaheed Police Lines, where he laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument and offered prayers for the fallen officers. Senior officials, including DPO Sahibzada Sajjad Ahmed, were present on the occasion.
During a subsequent inspection, the IGP reviewed newly acquired firearms and ammunition, described as critical strategic assets in counterterrorism efforts. He was briefed on the technical capabilities of local police personnel who have developed expertise in the maintenance and repair of police equipment.
The IGP also convened a jirga with religious scholars, peace committee members, and tribal elders from Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and South Waziristan. Addressing the participants, he said that multiple initiatives — including Safe City projects, procurement of advanced vehicles, and construction of fortified police stations were underway in southern KP to improve law and order.
“Peace in this region is essential for future generations,” he said, calling for unity and cooperation to defeat anti-state elements.
Earlier in the day, IGP Hameed chaired a meeting at the RPO office, where he was briefed on progress related to various infrastructure projects. He directed that all planned initiatives, including police posts and Safe City components, be launched within 15 days.
Concluding his visit, the IGP also participated in the province’s ongoing tree plantation campaign by planting a sapling at the site.
