PESHAWAR: In light of the recent increase in petroleum product prices, an important meeting was held under the chairmanship of Commissioner Peshawar Division, Riaz Khan Mehsud, to address the issue of arbitrary fare hikes in public transport and to ensure fair formulation of new fare schedules.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Captain (R) Sanaullah, Director General Capital Metropolitan, Secretary Regional Transport Authority Abrar Ahmad Wazir, Secretary PTA Akbar Iftikhar, Traffic Magistrate Basharat Ahmad, and a representative delegation of the Transport Association.
The Commissioner issued clear directives stating that since nearly 70% of inter-provincial transport in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa operates on CNG, no increase in fares for CNG-run vehicles will be allowed. He emphasized that arbitrary fare increases must be strictly prevented.
It was decided that fare lists for petrol- and diesel-operated transport would be revised in accordance with current fuel prices. Additionally, official fare charts and scheduled rates will be prominently displayed at all transport terminals.
The Commissioner directed the Director General Capital Metropolitan to immediately install banners and posters displaying the approved fare schedules at all transport stands. Meanwhile, the Secretary Regional Transport Authority and Secretary PTA were instructed to expedite the preparation of revised fare lists for petrol- and diesel-operated vehicles.
The meeting also decided that the Secretary Regional Transport Authority would conduct visits to private bus terminals to ensure implementation of official fares. To curb overcharging, three Assistant Commissioners will be deployed at major bus terminals in Peshawar—Haji Camp Adda, Charsadda Adda, and Kohat Adda—along with officials from the Regional Transport Authority, Provincial Transport Authority, and Capital Metropolitan.
Officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination among all relevant departments to provide relief to the public and ensure transparency in transport fares. They also made it clear that any action against public interest will not be tolerated, and strict action will be taken against violators.
