ISLAMABAD: Dr. Anila Ali, President and CEO of the American Muslims & Multifaith Women Empowerment Council, has called on Pakistan to seize what she described as a critical opportunity to adopt a comprehensive “zero tolerance” policy against terrorism, emphasizing that national security and economic stability must take precedence over external considerations.
In a phone conversation, Dr. Ali stressed that Pakistan must act decisively to eliminate terrorism from its soil, arguing that such a move is essential for long-term prosperity and internal stability. She noted that regional dynamics increasingly reflect a shift toward self-interest, where countries prioritize their own citizens, borders, and economic progress over broader ideological alignments.
Drawing comparisons with Gulf states, Dr. Ali pointed out that countries like Saudi Arabia have consistently pushed for stronger counterterrorism measures, even at significant economic cost. She further referenced the cautious approach of some states toward confronting groups such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, observing that action often comes only after direct threats materialize.
“Every country ultimately looks out for itself,” she said, adding that notions of collective unity often take a backseat to national priorities. She cited examples such as United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, which she said have taken independent decisions in pursuit of their own national interests, regardless of external pressures or costs.
Dr. Ali underscored that Pakistan must draw lessons from these approaches, particularly in light of its own security challenges. She noted that despite past conflicts, Pakistan has often had to navigate its challenges without significant external support, reinforcing the need for an independent and pragmatic policy framework.
Highlighting the aspirations of ordinary citizens, she said the average Pakistani seeks stability, security, and economic opportunity. “Whether in Pakistan or abroad, people want prosperity and a better future,” she remarked, urging policymakers to align national strategy with these fundamental expectations.
Dr. Ali concluded by emphasizing that a decisive break from past ambiguities on terrorism could pave the way for sustainable growth, improved global standing, and a more secure future for Pakistan.
