PESHAWAR: Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkkhwa on Information and Public Relations, Shafi Jan, has said that the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa considers journalists as vital stakeholders in the province’s development and has urged the media fraternity to play a proactive role in safeguarding provincial rights.
He was addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet of the Peshawar Press Club held at the Chief Minister House Peshawar. A large number of journalists associated with the press club attended the event. The oath was administered to the newly elected cabinet by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi.
Congratulating the new office-bearers, Shafi Jan expressed confidence that the cabinet would work towards strengthening journalistic values, enhancing the institutional credibility of the press club, and effectively addressing the issues faced by the journalist community.
Highlighting the sacrifices rendered by media professionals, he said journalists in the province have upheld the principles of truth and responsible reporting despite terrorism and persistent security challenges. He paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty, noting that journalists continued to provide accurate and timely information to the public under extremely difficult circumstances.
The special assistant reiterated that the provincial government remains committed to resolving journalists’ issues on a priority basis. He said practical measures are being undertaken to ensure the security, welfare and professional protection of media practitioners across the province.
Shafi Jan further stated that the Khyber Pakhtunkkhwa government has fostered an enabling environment where journalists can perform their professional responsibilities with editorial independence and impartiality. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to press freedom, he said freedom of expression is essential for Haqiqi Azadi and sustainable development.
He concluded by extending his best wishes to the newly elected cabinet and assured them of the government’s full cooperation.
