DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Gomal University has launched a free-ship scholarship programme aimed at supporting orphan and financially disadvantaged students, marking a significant step towards expanding access to higher education.
The initiative has been made possible through the efforts of Director Admissions Riaz Ahmed Bettani, in collaboration with philanthropist Asad Bukhari and his spouse.
The launching ceremony was attended by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Naimatullah Khan Babar, Prof Dr Zahid Awan, Prof Dr Asma Saeed, Director Finance Zakiullah Khan Gandapur, and selected students who have been shortlisted under the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Naimatullah Khan Babar termed the initiative a commendable example of social and educational service, describing it as an important milestone for the university and its students.
Director Admissions Riaz Ahmed Bettani said that under the programme, full tuition fee waivers would be granted to academically outstanding students with a CGPA of 3.7 or above, particularly those who are orphans or facing financial hardship. He added that beneficiaries would be required to maintain their academic performance and, after completing their education and becoming financially stable, support at least two other deserving students from their areas.
In the first phase, 13 students have been selected, and a cheque worth Rs380,000 has been issued in the name of the Director Finance for disbursement.
Asad Bukhari announced that he would bear all educational expenses of the selected students until completion of their studies. He further said the programme would be expanded to include up to 50 students in the next academic session. He also revealed plans to establish a modern artificial intelligence and online earning centre in Islamabad to help underprivileged youth become self-reliant.
The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on public-private collaboration in the education sector, particularly in facilitating access for marginalised segments of society.
