PESHAWAR: Faisal Karim Kundi, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has emphasized that promoting the mediation system in southern and newly merged districts will help reduce judicial burden while strengthening sustainable peace, social harmony, and the investment climate in the province.

He expressed these views while addressing as chief guest at a two-day mediation training program organized by the International Mediation & Arbitration Centre at the National Institute of Public Administration, Peshawar. The training was conducted under the Ministry of Law & Justice and attended by civil servants, lawyers, businessmen, and academicians from southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On the occasion, the Governor distributed certificates among the participants. Director General Captain (retd) Usman Gul and Project Director Ayesha Rasool briefed him about the objectives and scope of the training program. The Governor also planted a sapling in the institute’s green area as part of the ceremony.

Addressing the participants, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi noted that the Jirga system in the region has historically served as a respected mechanism for dispute resolution based on mutual respect and collective wisdom. He said that modern mediation frameworks further strengthen this tradition by incorporating constitutional safeguards, impartiality, and confidentiality. Mediation and conciliation, he added, are not substitutes for tradition but rather their alignment with contemporary legal standards.

He highlighted that globally, mediation enables quicker dispute resolution and stressed the need to promote a similar model in Pakistan. Referring to proposed amendments to the ADR Act, the Governor described the proposal to make pre-trial mediation mandatory in certain cases as a far-sighted initiative that would allow parties to resolve disputes amicably before entering prolonged court proceedings.

He further stated that the newly merged districts are undergoing a historic transition and that mediation can serve as a vital bridge, reinforcing constitutional order while preserving social cohesion and harmony.
