PESHAWAR: Hamza Foundation CEO Ijaz Khan has urged the public and authorities to take immediate action in the fight against thalassemia, a serious hereditary blood disorder that affects thousands of people in Pakistan every year.
Ijaz Khan has strongly appealed to the government to make thalassemia and blood tests mandatory in government and private schools and colleges.
Addressing a public awareness session, Ijaz Khan stressed that mandatory blood testing before marriage is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the disease.

“A simple blood test before marriage can save countless children from a lifetime of pain and medical complications. Prevention is not just an option – it is a responsibility,” Khan said.

Hamza Foundation is advocating for:
Mandatory pre-marital screening for thalassemia across the country.
* Increased public awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and community centers
* Government support for legislation to implement pre-marital blood testing
* Expanded free testing facilities in both urban and rural areas.

Ijaz Khan also highlighted the importance of continued awareness after marriage for carriers, encouraging genetic counseling for at-risk couples.

Ijaz Khan added that many countries have largely controlled and Iran, Maldives, Dubai, Cyprus and others have largely eliminated
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that can cause severe anemia and other health complications. It can be prevented through awareness, testing, and informed family planning decisions.
