PROVINCE REPORT
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party Workers (PPPW) leaders have paid tribute to the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy, describing their sacrifices as an enduring symbol of loyalty, courage and unwavering commitment to democracy.
The tragedy occurred on October 18, 2007, when suicide bombings targeted the welcome procession of former Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in Karachi’s Karsaz area. The attacks claimed more than 175 lives and injured hundreds, leaving a painful mark on Pakistan’s democratic history.
PPPW President Dr. Safdar Ali Abbasi, former Member of the National Assembly Mohtarma Naheed Khan, Senior Vice Presidents Fayyaz Ali Khan and Advocate Amjad Baloch, General Secretary Kanwar Zahid, and other party leaders paid homage to the workers who lost their lives in the attacks.
Those paying tribute also included Ibrahim Khan, Farah Aslam, former Member of the Provincial Assembly Sajida Mir, Hoor Bukhari, Malik Mazhar, Naveed Sadiq, Rana Usman and Hashim Khan Babar.
The leaders said the workers had made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their leader and supporting the democratic struggle. They stressed that the sacrifices of the martyrs must never be forgotten and should continue to inspire efforts to strengthen democracy, promote political tolerance, maintain peace and safeguard fundamental rights.
They demanded transparent and impartial investigations into the Karsaz tragedy, the disclosure of all relevant facts and the bringing of those responsible to justice.
The PPPW leaders further said the suffering of the victims’ families and the memory of those who lost their lives placed a lasting responsibility on the nation to uphold democratic values and ensure that such sacrifices were not in vain.
They added that the Karsaz martyrs were not merely part of a political party’s legacy but an unforgettable chapter in Pakistan’s democratic struggle. Their courage and sacrifices, they said, would always be remembered with honour and respect.
