PESHAWAR: The Inter-Club Independence Day Tennis Championship, organised by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tennis Association, has commenced at Qayyum Sports Complex, Peshawar. The championship was formally inaugurated by Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Coach Shafqatullah, AD Sports Kashif Farhan and Pakistan Davis Cupper and National Gold Medallist Sanaullah. Senior Vice President of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tennis Association Umar Ayaz Khalil and other prominent personalities were also present.
Players aged 9 to 19 are participating in the championship. Each team comprises four players, while cash prizes, trophies and certificates will be awarded to the teams and players securing first, second and third positions.
At the opening ceremony, an Independence Day cake was cut to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day. A birthday cake was also cut for Rayan Umar Khalil, after which the tennis competitions formally got underway.
The participating teams have been named after prominent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa tennis players who are no longer with us, in recognition of their services and memorable contributions to the sport. They include Haji Malak Umrah Khan, Haji Atlas Khan, Haji Kachkol Khan, Haji Mian Khan, Haji Maqbool Khan, Inayatullah Khan, Daulat Khan, Awal Khan, Riaz Khan, Kamal Khan, Imtiaz Khan, Sardar Khan, Khan Saeed, Kachkol Khan and Haji Banur Khan.
The championship aims to celebrate Independence Day through the spirit of sports, provide young tennis players with an opportunity to showcase their talent, and promote tennis at the grassroots level across the province.
