PESHAWAR: The head of the Marwat Qaumi Ittehad and former Federal Minister, Salim Saifullah Khan, has welcomed Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement regarding the construction of dams in the country, terming the formation of a committee for this purpose a positive step.
While speaking to the media, Salim Saifullah Khan strongly urged the Prime Minister to urgently release funds for Phase II of the Kurram Tangi Dam, emphasizing that it is a project of national importance, which was approved back in 2001. He said that Phase I of the dam has already been completed, and compared to other dams, Phase II of the Kurram Tangi Dam can be completed in less time and at a lower cost.
He highlighted that the construction of this dam will irrigate more than 362,000 acres of land across the southern districts including Bannu, Lakki Marwat, North Waziristan, Bettani Subdivision, and Karak. In addition, the dam will generate 84 megawatts of electricity and will significantly help in flood prevention in these districts.
Salim Saifullah Khan appealed to the Prime Minister to take personal interest in the construction of the Kurram Tangi Dam, stating that although it is an ongoing project, it is unfortunate that no funds were allocated for it in the current fiscal year’s budget.
