Dera Ismail Khan: A comprehensive discussion on the “Responsible Role of Media in National Development” was held at the City Campus of Gomal University. The session was organized by the Dosti Peshawar Literature Festival (Fifth Edition), Dera Chapter, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ehsanullah Danish, Director of Gomal University Tank Campus.
Senior journalist Muhammad Rehan hosted the discussion. Prominent speakers included Bureau Chief of Daily Etihad and ARY reporter Muhammad Irfan Mughal, Press Information Department In-charge Dera, PRO to Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr. Muhammad Fazlur Rehman, and senior journalist and columnist Abul Moazzam Turabi. The panelists deliberated on various dimensions of media responsibility and responded to students’ questions.
Speakers emphasized that media serves as the fourth pillar of the state and plays a decisive role in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development. They stated that only responsible and ethical journalism can bring constructive change in society. While highlighting corruption, maladministration, and public issues remains a core duty of the press, development projects and positive initiatives must also receive due coverage to foster hope and public confidence.
Concern was expressed over the rising trend of fake news and sensationalism in the social media era. The speakers underscored that journalistic values must not be compromised in pursuit of ratings and online views. Verification, research, and balanced reporting were described as indispensable principles before publishing any news.
The concept of constructive and solutions-oriented journalism was highlighted, stressing that media should present workable solutions alongside problems. Participants noted that media can positively influence policymaking by shaping informed public opinion.
The discussion also covered challenges faced by journalists, including access to information and the need for professional training. Maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and national interest was termed essential in the current scenario.
Participants further addressed issues related to state and personal narratives, countering propaganda by anti-national elements, and the responsibilities of youth and educational institutions. The continuation of such intellectual forums was declared vital.
The speakers paid tribute to Professor Dr. Ehsanullah Danish and his team for successfully organizing the Dosti Literary Festival event and promoting meaningful dialogue on critical national issues.
