Persons with disabilities (PwDs) belonging to the merged districts of Khyber, Mohmand, Orakzai, Bajaur, Kurram, North and South Waziristan staged a peaceful sit-in outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly to press for the fulfillment of their basic rights.
Led by Naik Badshah, the protesters expressed serious concern over the non-implementation of promises made by the government and strongly demanded immediate provision of special education, employment opportunities and financial assistance. They also closed road adjacent to the assembly building.
However soon after the protest began, officials from the Social Welfare Department and the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar, along with their teams, reached the site and held negotiations with the protesters. They assured the demonstrators of serious steps for the resolution of their issues and full cooperation at every level.
On receiving these assurances from the authorities, the protesters ended their sit-in temporarily and dispersed peacefully. However, they also indicated that if their demands are not met, they will expand the scope of their protest.
