MOSCOW: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia has strongly condemned the recent airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel against the Iran, describing them as a deliberate and unprovoked act of aggression that violates fundamental principles of international law.

In an official statement issued on February 28, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the airstrikes conducted earlier in the day targeted Iranian territory and followed extensive military, political, and propaganda preparations, including the deployment of significant US military forces to the region.

According to the statement, the attacks represent a premeditated act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state, undermining the principles of non-interference, peaceful dispute resolution, and the prohibition of the use or threat of force.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed particular concern that the strikes occurred amid a renewed negotiation process aimed at achieving long-term normalization around the Islamic Republic of Iran. Moscow noted that earlier assurances had been conveyed suggesting that Israel had no intention of entering into direct military confrontation with Iran.

Russia called on the international community, including the leadership of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to urgently provide an objective and unbiased assessment of the strikes, warning that such actions threaten peace, stability, and security across the Middle East.

The statement further warned that the actions of Washington and Tel Aviv risk pushing the region toward a humanitarian, economic, and potentially even radiological disaster. Moscow accused the two countries of pursuing a dangerous course that could lead to uncontrolled escalation and a broader spiral of violence.

Russia also raised alarm over the possible consequences for the global non-proliferation regime, particularly the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which it described as a cornerstone of international security.

The Foreign Ministry criticized attempts to justify the strikes as efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, stating that attacks on nuclear facilities operating under IAEA safeguards are unacceptable and undermine the objectives of the global non-proliferation framework.

Highlighting concerns over what it described as a sustained pattern of destabilizing actions by the US administration, Russia warned that such policies threaten the international legal order and risk prompting countries, particularly in the Middle East, to pursue increasingly serious means to counter emerging threats.

Russia called for an immediate return to political and diplomatic engagement, reaffirming that it remains ready to assist efforts aimed at achieving peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect, and balanced consideration of all parties’ interests.
