NAGOYA, JAPAN — October 2, 2026: Pakistan’s athletes are making a strong impression at the 20th Asian Games 2026, delivering notable performances across shooting, cricket, hockey, volleyball, squash and esports.
Olympian Ghulam Mustafa Bashir secured Pakistan’s first official medal of the Games by winning bronze in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol event. His composed performance against leading Asian shooters earned Pakistan a place on the podium.
Pakistan also advanced to the cricket final after defeating Bangladesh by six wickets in a rain-affected semi-final reduced to 13 overs per side. Bangladesh posted 111 runs for seven wickets, while Pakistan reached the target in 11.3 overs. Abdullah Samad played a decisive unbeaten innings of 30 runs from 14 deliveries. Pakistan will face India in the gold-medal final on October 3.
The national hockey team also booked its place in the final with a commanding 7-2 victory over Oman. Wahid Ashraf Rana scored a hat-trick, while Sufyan Khan added two goals. Pakistan will meet India in the gold-medal match on October 3.
In volleyball, Pakistan defeated Uzbekistan 3-0 in straight sets, maintaining its strong campaign. The national squash team also progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Hong Kong, securing another medal opportunity for Pakistan.
Pakistan’s esports athletes have likewise advanced in PUBG Mobile and Free Fire following strong performances in the preliminary rounds.
While Pakistan has recorded significant successes, athletes in jiu-jitsu, badminton and some shooting events were unable to progress further. Persistent rain and adverse weather conditions have also affected several outdoor competitions.
Pakistan’s campaign continues with major medal opportunities in cricket, hockey and squash as the national contingent seeks further success at the Asian Games.
