ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik held a high-level meeting with H.E. Fahad Bin Sulaiman Bin Khalaf Alkharusi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Pakistan, to review the evolving regional energy landscape and explore avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
Strong Bilateral Ties and Commitment to Energy Partnership
During the meeting, the Federal Minister underscored the longstanding, cordial, and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Oman, built on shared history, mutual respect, and robust people-to-people connections. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral energy ties and identifying new areas of collaboration to meet future energy demands.
Focus on Energy Diversification and Supply Resilience
Highlighting Pakistan’s strategic priorities, Minister Malik briefed the Ambassador on ongoing efforts to diversify energy imports and enhance supply resilience. He emphasized the importance of exploring alternative routes and sources beyond the Strait of Hormuz, particularly in light of shifting regional dynamics and the need for uninterrupted energy supplies.
The Omani Ambassador welcomed Pakistan’s proactive approach toward diversification and reiterated Oman’s readiness to support Pakistan in strengthening its energy security framework.
Oman’s Support and Increased Energy Supplies
In a positive development, the Minister expressed optimism that Oman would consider Pakistan’s request for preferential energy cargoes to help meet its growing domestic needs. The Ambassador responded constructively, assuring that the request would be given favorable consideration.
It was noted that during the month of March, Pakistan successfully imported three cargoes of petrol and one cargo of diesel from Omani ports, with two additional petrol cargoes expected to arrive before the end of the month.
Expanding Cooperation in Oil, Gas, and Upstream Sectors
Both sides also explored opportunities for deeper collaboration in the upstream energy sector, including oil and gas exploration and production. The discussions highlighted the importance of expanding joint initiatives in energy development projects to ensure long-term sustainability.
Furthermore, it was shared that Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and OQ Trading are engaged in constructive negotiations to explore the possibility of securing additional oil cargoes to meet Pakistan’s increasing energy requirements.
Shared Vision for Strategic Energy Cooperation
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to further deepen Pakistan-Oman cooperation in the energy sector. Emphasis was placed on building a resilient, mutually beneficial partnership that supports energy security, economic growth, and long-term strategic interests of both nations.
