Karachi: A suspect allegedly involved in the murder of a woman and her three children in Surjani Town was killed in a police encounter on Thursday after he allegedly snatched a police pistol and opened fire while being taken to recover the murder weapon, police said. The suspect Humayun, had been arrested in connection with the killings of Mehwish and her three children.
SSP West Tariq Ilahi Mastoi said police took Humayun into custody to recover the weapon allegedly used in the murders. The suspect was taken to the location on his identification when he allegedly took advantage of the situation and snatched the pistol of ASI Nauman Sheikh. Humayun allegedly opened indiscriminate fire with the snatched weapon and attempted to escape. During the firing, ASI Nauman sustained a gunshot wound to his arm.
Police personnel accompanying the officer returned fire in self-defence. The exchange of fire resulted in Humayun being killed at the scene, according to police. Police subsequently recovered the pistol allegedly snatched from ASI from the deceased suspect. The alleged murder weapon, an iron rod, was also recovered on Humayun’s identification, SSP Mastoi said.
The suspect’s arrest had been disclosed earlier on Thursday by the DIG West during a press conference, where police provided details of the investigation and his alleged confession. Humayun allegedly confessed to killing Mehwish with an iron rod after she allegedly refused his demand for sexual relations. He allegedly then killed her two daughters and a son.
