Directorate of Science & Technology KP Supports Undergraduate Project on Low-Cost Antimicrobials

MARDAN: Three undergraduate students from Women University Mardan have been awarded a research grant under the Undergraduate Research Support Program by the Directorate General of Science and Technology, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The selected students Kashmala Sajid, Samia Ijaz, and Samra Arshad belong to the departments of Biochemistry and Chemistry. Their research proposal was approved as part of the provincial government’s project “Building Provincial STI System.”

The research focuses on developing low-cost and effective pharmaceutical materials, specifically antimicrobial agents, with the aim of improving public health outcomes. The project is being supervised by Dr. Tauseef Rehan, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, and Dr. Naila Zubair, Assistant Professor of Chemistry.

According to the university, the project has the potential to introduce affordable treatments in the healthcare system and contribute significantly to combating microbial infections in resource-limited settings.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Razia Sultana lauded the achievement, stating that it reflects the university’s commitment to empowering women in science and promoting impactful research. She said the success demonstrates how young female scientists are taking active roles in addressing real-world challenges through innovation.

The initiative marks a step forward for women-led research in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and highlights the increasing role of academic institutions in supporting science-driven public health solutions.
