In a time when the world grapples with climate change, environmental neglect, and social disconnect, one campaign in Karachi is planting more than just trees—it is sowing a legacy of compassion, sacrifice, and collective responsibility. Titled “ایک درخت حسین کے نام” (A Tree in the Name of Hussain), this annual plantation drive by Who is Hussain – Pakistan serves as a living tribute to Imam Hussain ibn Ali (AS)—a figure revered not just for his stand against tyranny, but for his unwavering commitment to justice, humanity, and moral courage. Rooted in these values, the campaign transforms the act of planting into a form of remembrance, where each sapling symbolizes hope, resilience, and a pledge to nurture life, just as Hussain (AS) nurtured the spirit of truth in the face of oppression. Launched in 2020, the initiative was born from a desire to connect Hussain’s timeless message with modern-day action—encouraging citizens to heal their environment while honoring a legacy that continues to inspire hearts across generations.

Running from the 1st to the 8th of Muharram each year since 2020, this initiative continues to blend spiritual values with civic responsibility and environmental awareness. This year, the campaign reached a significant milestone with the distribution of 6,000 saplings across seven key locations in Karachi: Soldier Bazaar, Jafar Tayyar, New Rizvia Society, IRC, Dow Medical College, Nishtar Park, and Amroha Society. The selection of trees—including Neem, Jamun, Moringa, and Gul Mohar—was made with a focus on sustainability and adaptability to Karachi’s climate, ensuring long-term ecological benefits.

Speaking about the journey of the initiative, Syed Kazim Mehdi, Media Coordinator for Who is Hussain – Pakistan, reflected on its origins and evolution:
“When we first launched this campaign in 2020, we were unsure how it would be received by the people of Karachi. To our surprise, the public response was not only positive but also deeply encouraging. Citizens embraced the campaign’s message and purpose, which has motivated us to continue and grow this initiative each year.”

Kazim emphasized the symbolic nature of connecting the campaign to the memory of Imam Hussain (AS), noting:
“Imam Hussain (AS) sacrificed everything for the betterment of humanity. This campaign is our humble attempt to reflect that spirit by promoting actions that benefit future generations. Tree plantation is not just an act of environmental preservation—it is Sadaqah Jariyah, a form of continuous charity that contributes to the well-being of the planet and its people.”

Beyond the annual plantation drive, Who is Hussain – Pakistan (Karachi Chapter) remains active throughout the year with a diverse range of welfare campaigns. The organization regularly holds environmental awareness drives to educate the public on the importance of a clean and green environment. During the holy month of Ramadan, it organizes special events such as the “Salon for Stars,” which offers grooming services and care for street children. Through its Education Support Program (ESP), it extends academic assistance to deserving students from underprivileged communities. The organization also carries out blood donation drives, particularly supporting patients suffering from thalassemia. Another notable initiative is the “Mall of Happiness,” a one-day event arranged for orphan children, where they are given the opportunity to choose and receive items of their liking, giving them a joyful and empowering experience.

These ongoing efforts reflect the organization’s commitment not only to environmental sustainability but also to social upliftment and compassionate community service. The plantation drive itself serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role trees play in maintaining ecological balance—purifying the air, reducing greenhouse gases, preventing soil erosion, conserving water, and preserving biodiversity. Through “ایک درخت حسین کے نام”, the organization hopes to inspire a broader understanding of these environmental concerns while honoring a legacy rooted in sacrifice, compassion, and service to humanity.

As each sapling takes root and grows, it becomes a living tribute to Imam Hussain (AS)—a lasting symbol of resilience, growth, and hope for future generations. Through such meaningful initiatives, Who is Hussain – Pakistan continues to plant not only trees, but also seeds of awareness, unity, and positive change in society.
