PESHAWAR: Former world squash champion legend Qamar Zaman said that celebrating World Sports Day in collaboration with the Pakistan Sports Writers Federation and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Writers Association is a welcome initiative. He said this while addressing a ceremony in Peshawar on the occasion of World Sports Day. It should be remembered that like the rest of the world and other parts of the country, World Sports Journalism Day was celebrated in Peshawar with the cooperation of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Writers Association and the Pakistan Sports Writers Federation. On this occasion, Acting President Sports Writers Association Imran Yousafzai, General Secretary Shahid Afridi, Shakeel-ur-Rehman, Arshad Dar, Qadir Khan, Hashim Khan, Ijaz Butt, Kaleem Qureshi, Azmatullah and Farhan Khalil, besides the coach of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Cricket Team Muhammad Tanveer and members of the Sports Writers Association were present. Qamar Zaman, who participated in the event, added that he congratulated all of you on this occasion. The role of media is very important in sports. In the seventies, we were told that two institutions, media and sponsors, should be taken together. I was also involved in the establishment of the Sports Writers Association of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and now the time has come that sports have also gone digital. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reporters played an important role in bringing the players forward and fulfilled their professional responsibilities well for the promotion of sports in the province, which is commendable. Earlier, Acting President Imran Yousafzai and Secretary General Shahid Afridi said that this day has been celebrated as an international day since 1994, with the aim of appreciating the role of journalists in the world of sports, acknowledging their services and attracting the younger generation to this field. Today’s era is moving towards digital and sports journalists need to adapt to the modern era. He said that along with the government, media coverage also played an important role in developing sports fields. It should be noted that events are being held regularly in Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta and Karachi on the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day.
