PESHAWAR : Preparations for the National Junior Championship 2026 are in full swing in Peshawar, with the prestigious event set to commence on June 7 at the Qayyum Sports Complex. Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, will formally inaugurate the championship during a grand opening ceremony.
Advisor to the Chief Minister on Sports and Youth Affairs, Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, said that a total of 952 talented male and female athletes from all four provinces and various government departments will participate in the championship.
The event is being organized by the Directorate General of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and will feature competitions in squash, table tennis, athletics, badminton, karate, and volleyball. Separate competitions have been arranged for male and female athletes in all disciplines, except volleyball, which will be contested only in the men’s category.
Speaking to the media, Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand urged young athletes to take the championship as an opportunity to showcase their talent and abilities. He emphasized that participants should strive to bring pride not only to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also to their respective provinces and Pakistan.
He said the provincial government, under the leadership of the Chief Minister, is utilizing all available resources to provide equal and quality sporting opportunities for the youth. “This championship is not merely a sporting competition; it is an excellent platform for bringing together talented young athletes from across Pakistan and helping them develop their potential,” he added.
The opening ceremony will be held on June 7 at the Peshawar Sports Complex. Competitions in various sports will continue from June 8 to June 10, while the squash events will take place earlier, from June 3 to June 5.
