Staff Report

PESHAWAR: Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar has made a historic decision to replace the outdated and colonial-era job titles of its Class-IV employees with modern and dignified designations. From now on, the terms “Sweeper,” “Peon,” and “Driver” will officially be replaced with “Services Staff,” “Office Attendant,” and “Vehicle Operator,” respectively. This initiative aims to restore the self-respect of these employees and ensure their social dignity. The decision was taken in the 23rd monthly meeting of all heads of departments and constituent institutes, held at Alexander Fleming Hall under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia Ul Haq.

Addressing the meeting, Prof. Dr. Zia Ul Haq said that this decision was the result of thorough deliberations and based on the recommendations of a special committee. “The contribution of Class-IV employees is as important to the university’s progress and stability as that of the faculty, officers, and other staff. It is in recognition of their valuable role that we have adopted these respectful and dignified titles,” he remarked.

The Vice Chancellor further stated that, following the consolidation of its constituent institutes and implementation of financial discipline, KMU is now entering a new era of quality enhancement, research excellence, and reforms. While appreciating the cost-benefit analysis reports presented by various departments, he emphasized that in the coming academic year, focus must be placed not only on expansion but also on quality improvement.
He noted that to address the financial and administrative challenges faced by public sector universities, there is a need to align curricula with market demands, promote innovation, encourage commercialization, and generate new financial resources.

The meeting also decided to shift Hazara and Mardan campuses to new, more spacious buildings, while work is progressing rapidly on the establishment of new campuses in Dera Ismail Khan, Malakand (Thana), Upper Dir, and Buner. The Vice Chancellor also directed the relevant authorities to resolve transport, hostel, and other issues at the local level.

In addition, it was decided to establish modern Marquee based, air-conditioned regional E-Examination Centers in Malakand, Hazara, and southern districts (Dera Ismail Khan), following the successful model of Peshawar. Earlier in the meeting, heads of various institutes and departments presented their performance and cost-benefit analysis reports, which were appreciated by the house.
