PESHAWAR: Ms. Safa Sohail, an M.Phil. scholar at the Department of Food & Nutrition Sciences, College of Home Economics, University of Peshawar, successfully defended her thesis under the supervision of Dr. Fazia Ghaffar and co-supervision of Dr. Ibrar Ahmad, Consultant Endocrinologist.
Her research, titled “Assessment of Dietary Inflammatory Index in Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic Patients and Their Healthy Household Cohabitants: Insights into Shared Dietary Patterns,” was conducted at the Department of Diabetes & Endocrinology, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar.
The thesis was evaluated by Dr. Abbas Khan, Assistant Professor at the University of Haripur, under the academic supervision of Prof. Dr. Shazia Ghulam Muhammad, Principal of the College of Home Economics.
The study is among the first in Pakistan to examine newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes patients alongside their healthy household cohabitants using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). The findings highlight the value of family-centered nutrition interventions and anti-inflammatory dietary strategies in preventing and managing Type 2 diabetes.
Faculty members and postgraduate students praised the research for its scientific significance and its potential contribution to evidence-based nutrition practices and public health policy in Pakistan.
