BEIJING: Immersive role-playing performers portraying legendary historical and literary figures are breathing new life into China’s cultural tourism, attracting thousands of visitors to theme parks with interactive experiences that combine history, entertainment, and education.
At Wansuishan Martial Arts City and Millennium City Park in Kaifeng, Henan Province, non-player character (NPC) performers recreate scenes from the Northern Song Dynasty, engaging visitors through live performances, traditional games, and spontaneous interactions. Tourists can also wear period costumes and take on the roles of scholars, generals, or merchants, becoming part of the unfolding historical experience.
Many visitors say the interactive attractions provide a welcome escape from the pressures of daily life while offering a deeper appreciation of China’s rich cultural heritage. Teachers and families also value the parks for transforming textbook history into a vivid, hands-on learning experience.
Experts believe NPC performers have evolved from supporting entertainers into major tourist attractions as travelers increasingly seek immersive and participatory experiences. By blending storytelling with authentic historical settings, these “living legends” are helping preserve China’s cultural heritage while driving the growth of domestic tourism.
