ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of Cuba, in collaboration with solidarity organizations, has launched a series of events in Islamabad to commemorate the birth centenary of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
The opening workshop, titled “Fidel: the Driving Force for Solidarity,” brought together diplomats, members of the Pakistan-Cuba Social Forum, the Association of Pakistani Doctors Graduated in Cuba, the Federation of Progressive Students, intellectuals, business representatives, and Pakistani students selected to study medicine in Cuba.
Cuban Ambassador Damián Cordero inaugurated the event, highlighting Fidel Castro’s legacy and Cuba’s commitment to international solidarity. He also welcomed the recent United Nations vote against the US blockade on Cuba and thanked friendly countries for their continued support.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sohaib Haider, who shared his experiences of studying in Cuba and emphasized the values of humanitarian service and social commitment.
Participants also watched the documentary On the Hillsides of the Himalayas, which portrays the humanitarian work of Cuba’s Henry Reeve medical brigade in assisting victims of Pakistan’s devastating 2005 earthquake.
The ceremony concluded with a musical performance of La Guantanamera and a group photograph, marking the beginning of centenary commemorations that will continue through August.
