PROVINCE REPORT
KARACHI: Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik has emphasized the need for inclusive dialogue, climate preparedness and sustainable environmental policies to tackle Pakistan’s growing climate challenges.
Speaking during a house dialogue with climate experts, environmental activists and media representatives at the Climate Action Centre Karachi, the Minister said Karachi’s diversity of people and ideas makes it an ideal place for meaningful discussions on climate issues. He stressed that the government values the recommendations of experts and civil society in shaping practical and effective climate policies.
Dr. Malik said his visit came at a critical time as Pakistan enters the monsoon season. He noted that the government is closely monitoring preparedness measures and reviewing actions to minimize the impact of heavy rains, flooding and other climate-related emergencies.
He warned that northern parts of the country are likely to experience heavy rainfall and flooding due to accelerated glacier melting caused by rising temperatures. At the same time, some regions may face drought because of below-normal rainfall, while major urban centres remain vulnerable to cloudbursts and urban flooding. He said these climate-related events pose serious risks to agriculture, infrastructure, food security, livelihoods and the national economy.
The Minister stressed that effective climate action requires cooperation among government institutions, experts, civil society and local communities. He said environmental protection can only succeed through public participation and coordinated efforts despite limited resources.
Highlighting Pakistan’s renewable energy potential, Dr. Musadik Malik said the country possesses abundant solar and wind resources that can support sustainable development. He called for policies that encourage investment in clean energy, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions while contributing to a healthier environment.
The dialogue concluded with an exchange of recommendations between the Minister, climate experts and media representatives, reaffirming the government’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking, environmental sustainability and strengthening Pakistan’s resilience against climate change.
