PROVINCE REPORT
ADDIS ABABA: The first regular inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives was held in Addis Ababa, marking the formation of a new Federal Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The House elected H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of Ethiopia for another five-year term.
The election follows the 7th General Elections, which were conducted peacefully with more than 54 million registered voters. The Prosperity Party won 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.
Voting was held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils. International observer missions, including those of the African Union (AU) and IGAD, endorsed the electoral process as transparent.
In his inaugural remarks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the election as an event tested and refined “like gold through fire,” saying it had ultimately strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite numerous challenges.
He emphasized that winning and losing political parties are natural outcomes of democratic competition, but stressed that “Ethiopia has no losing children, only winners.”
The Prime Minister said national challenges could be overcome only by moving forward together as brothers. He further noted that Ethiopia’s influential and leading position in East Africa was not the result of external charity, but was secured through the country’s own strength, resilience and popular foundation.
He reaffirmed that Ethiopia would continue to serve as a firm anchor for regional peace and stability.
In his felicitation message, H.E. Dr. Oumer H. Oba, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership and members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on taking their official oaths for the five-year term.
On the formation of the new government, Ambassador Oba said it reflected the strength of Ethiopia’s democracy and the people’s firm commitment to democratic norms and values.
He wished the Ethiopian nation continued peace, prosperity and development, along with greater unity and social cohesion.
