Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gul Rukh Ali Shah, visited Central Jail Peshawar, where she met with women prisoners and reviewed the facilities being provided to them.
During the visit, Gul Rukh Ali Shah listened to the issues faced by women prisoners and announced steps to provide free legal assistance, including the availability of lawyers for poor and underprivileged inmates. She said that supporting needy prisoners in accessing justice was essential.
She also visited rehabilitation centres for drug-addicted individuals established within the jail and stressed the need to make the rehabilitation system more effective. She said practical measures were necessary to rehabilitate drug-affected individuals and help them become active members of society.
Gul Rukh Ali Shah expressed her commitment to taking special measures through the federal government for the welfare of women prisoners and their accompanying children. She said modern technical and vocational training would be provided to women prisoners so that they could earn respectable livelihoods after their release.
She added that all possible cooperation would continue for the rehabilitation of prisoners, provision of legal assistance, and improvement of welfare facilities, while further steps would be taken to strengthen the correctional system in jails.
