ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of Russia in Pakistan commemorated the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War on May 7, 2026, with a series of remembrance events highlighting the sacrifices made during the Second World War.
The celebrations began with the annual “Immortal Regiment” march, attended by Russian Chargé d’Affaires Natalia Shmeleva, Russian Defence Attaché Colonel Vadim Fenchenko, ambassadors of Belarus, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan along with their families, embassy staff, members of the Russian community in Pakistan, and citizens of several Central Asian countries.
The “Immortal Regiment” is a public remembrance campaign held around Victory Day on May 9, during which participants carry portraits of relatives who fought, perished, or contributed to the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. The march symbolizes the continuity of historical memory and honors the courage and sacrifices of those who defended their homeland during World War II.
As part of the commemorations, the Russian Embassy School hosted a special concert attended by ambassadors of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
In her opening remarks, Natalia Shmeleva stated that Victory Day remains a symbol of courage, unity, and the historic sacrifice of the peoples of the USSR who defeated Nazism despite immense hardships. She also criticized attempts to distort historical truth and emphasized Russia’s commitment to preserving the memory of the Soviet people’s victory.
A particularly moving segment of the evening featured wartime poetry recitations and heartfelt performances by children of embassy staff. Guests also viewed a photo exhibition titled “Saved Europe,” organized by the National Center for Historical Memory under the President of the Russian Federation.
