TINDOUF: The difficult conditions faced by thousands of Sahrawi families in the Tindouf camps have come under renewed scrutiny amid allegations of humanitarian-aid diversion, financial misconduct and the collapse of an investment scheme reportedly affecting residents of the camps.
The allegations have intensified concerns over the management of humanitarian assistance and the financial activities of Polisario Front representatives. Critics argue that the situation reflects a widening gap between the needs of camp residents and the leadership responsible for managing their affairs.
Aid Diversion Allegations Draw Renewed Attention
Reports by international institutions, including the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), have previously raised concerns regarding the handling and distribution of humanitarian assistance intended for refugees in the Tindouf camps.
In Italy, Sahrawi activists and other critics have also raised allegations concerning the management of humanitarian and medical-assistance projects associated with Polisario representative Fatima Mahfoud. The allegations, reported by independent media platforms, include claims of inadequate transparency and oversight in the use of funds.
These allegations require appropriate investigation and independent verification by competent authorities.
Infravest Collapse Sparks Anger
A separate financial controversy has reportedly emerged in the Tindouf camps following the collapse of Infravest for Contracting and Investment, a company that had operated in the camps since 2022.
According to the allegations, hundreds of residents, merchants and local cooperatives are seeking the recovery of funds reportedly amounting to around $6.6 million. The company’s reported head, Sallamou Abba Ali, is alleged to have left the area following the collapse of the scheme.
The affair has reportedly triggered protests and growing anger in areas including Rabouni and Chahid El Hafed. Critics have questioned how such a financial operation could continue for several years in the tightly controlled camp environment without effective regulatory oversight.
Calls for Greater International Oversight
The developments have prompted calls for greater transparency in humanitarian assistance provided to the Tindouf camps. Advocates are urging the European Union, donor countries and international humanitarian organisations to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, establish reliable population data and ensure independent auditing of aid-distribution channels.
The controversy also comes amid developments in Spain concerning proposed legislation related to citizenship for Sahrawis born under the former Spanish colonial administration and their descendants.
Humanitarian assistance, observers say, should remain focused on protecting the rights, dignity and basic needs of refugees, while allegations of financial misconduct should be investigated independently and through appropriate legal channels.
