On Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026, a tragic fire broke out in the newborn nursery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Out of the 15 newborn babies in the ward, 14 lost their lives. Only one baby was rescued .
The disaster happened around 6:45 AM on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health building. While early reports pointed to a short circuit or an exploding air conditioner compressor, looking closely at the incident shows that poor safety standards and delayed responses played a huge part in this loss of life.
How the Incident Unfolded
The fire started suddenly in the early hours of the morning. According to initial findings, a spark from an air conditioning unit ignited nearby materials. Within a minute, toxic smoke and flames filled the room.
The nursery environment made the situation much worse:
Newborns in intensive care rely on oxygen tubes. The extra oxygen in the air acted as fuel, causing the fire to spread rapidly.
Newborn infants in incubators cannot move, run, or save themselves; they depend completely on automated safety systems and adult help. The room lacked an automated fire control system to put out the flames immediately, and warnings came too late for staff to clear the room in time.
Following public anger, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif suspended the Federal Health Secretary and set up a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the matter.
However, suspending an official does not automatically fix broken systems.
To prevent such a disaster from happening again in any hospital, state authorities must focus on real solutions:
Hospital machinery and electrical wiring must be inspected regularly by independent experts.
Every hospital nursery needs clear evacuation procedures specifically planned for newborn care.
Hospitals must spend money on modern fire alarms and automatic fire systems rather than waiting for accidents to happen.
Fourteen families came to the city’s main public hospital expecting care for their newborns and ended up facing an unimaginable tragedy. True justice for these families will not come from temporary suspensions or press releases, but from fixing hospital wiring, upgrading alarms, and making sure public healthcare spaces are truly safe.
May the innocent souls of these newborn little ones be blessed with eternal peace and light.
May the Almighty grant their grieving mothers and fathers the deep strength , comfort, and resilience needed to carry this overwhelming heartbreak, while bringing complete health and protection to the surviving infant.
May our hearts remain filled with compassion, and may our leaders be guided toward the wisdom and vigilance required to safeguard every precious life.
