Chitral: The unique Uchal Festival of the Kalash tribe was celebrated in grand style in the scenic valleys of Bumburet and Rumbur, Chitral. A large number of tourists from across Pakistan and abroad participated, adding to the vibrancy of the valley.
The Uchal Festival is held annually on August 22 to celebrate the transfer of dairy products from mountain pastures to the villages. It also marks the joy of the harvest season and the sowing of new crops.
Former MPA Wazir Zada said that, like every year, a large number of tourists thronged the valley, not only to witness this unique festival but also to enjoy Kalash culture and hospitality. He added that the Kalash Valleys Development Authority had made excellent arrangements for both the local community and visiting tourists. He also thanked the district administration and security forces for ensuring exemplary arrangements and security during the festival.
The Kalash Valleys Development Authority arranged electricity and water supply, sanitation services, installation of security cameras, as well as separate seating areas for tourists.
The Uchal Festival continued throughout the day in Rumbur and concluded late at night in Bumburet with its traditional grandeur. It is noteworthy that the festival is celebrated only in Rumbur and Bumburet, while in Bireer Valley a similar festival, known as “Poad”, is observed in September.
For the Kalash tribe, the Uchal Festival is not only a symbol of their cultural identity but has also become a major attraction for tourists from around the world, boosting both tourism and the local economy of the valley.
