In the modern era, the nature of warfare has fundamentally transformed. Conflicts are no longer confined to physical borders; they are now being fiercely fought across social media platforms, narratives, and the domain of information. In recent days, a coordinated disinformation campaign against Pakistan has come to light, raising concerns not only in the region but across the globe.
Reports have emerged suggesting that India, along with elements in Afghanistan, allegedly fabricated a false narrative using Iran’s name in an attempt to malign Pakistan. Fake social media accounts were created under names such as “INN Iran News” and “Iran TV,” which appeared to be affiliated with Iranian media outlets. In reality, these accounts were designed to spread misleading and deceptive information.
Through these platforms, baseless claims were circulated alleging that Pakistan was secretly supplying oil to the United States. These accusations are not only devoid of facts but are also unsupported by any credible evidence. Such fabricated stories are often part of a broader, well-planned strategy aimed at influencing global public opinion.
What makes this campaign particularly dangerous is the level of sophistication with which it was executed. Dozens of fake accounts, identical messaging, and synchronized dissemination clearly indicate that this was not a random occurrence but part of an organized effort—commonly referred to as “hybrid warfare,” where minds are targeted instead of territories.
India’s use of such tactics is not unprecedented. In the past, similar attempts have been made to target Pakistan through fake news and propaganda on various occasions. However, the use of Iran’s name in this instance adds a new layer of sensitivity and complexity, given the historically strong cultural, religious, and diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Iran.
The objectives of this disinformation campaign appear to be clear. First, to create distrust between Pakistan and Iran, thereby weakening bilateral relations. Second, to undermine Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting peace in the Middle East. Third—and perhaps most concerning—to fuel division and discord within the Muslim world.
It is also important to note that Pakistan in recent years has been playing a proactive and balanced role in global diplomacy. Whether it is regional peace efforts or maintaining strategic balance among global powers, Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a responsible state. This very role may be the reason why certain actors seek to sabotage its image through information warfare.
The current situation calls for a robust response. Pakistan must not only raise this issue effectively on diplomatic fronts but also strengthen its digital defense mechanisms. Rapid rebuttal of fake news, timely dissemination of verified information, and promotion of digital literacy among the public are essential steps in countering such campaigns.
At the same time, international organizations must take serious notice of these disinformation operations, as they pose a threat not just to a single country but to global peace and stability.
In conclusion, the battle between truth and falsehood has become one of the most significant conflicts of our time. Pakistan must not only defend the truth but also actively convey to the international community that propaganda can never replace reality.
The time has come to empower truth and expose the web of lies—because a strong narrative is the foundation of a strong state.
