CHARSADDA: Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), has announced a major conference in memory of slain religious scholar Maulana Muhammad Idrees Shaheed and warned of strong protest actions, including a shutter-down strike and blockade of major motorways, over the continued failure to arrest those responsible for his killing.
According to party leaders, an important meeting of the district executive body of JUI Charsadda was held at Jamia Mahmoodia Tangi. The meeting was chaired by district JUI chief Maulana Dr. Ilahi Jan and attended by General Secretary Haji Danishmand, Information Secretary Hanifullah Hasrat, Maulana Haq Nawaz Durrani, and other office-bearers from across the district.
During the meeting, participants expressed serious concern over what they described as the government’s failure to arrest the killers of Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idrees Shaheed despite the passage of time since the incident. The participants urged the government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and practical steps to bring the culprits to justice.
The meeting also decided to launch a district-wide protest campaign. As part of the protest plan, JUI announced a shutter-down strike in Charsadda and warned of blocking the Peshawar, Lahore, and Rawalpindi motorways if the suspects are not arrested soon.
Party leaders said the protest movement would be expanded if authorities continued to delay action in the case.
Following the directions of JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the meeting formally announced that a “Shaheed-e-Islam Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idrees Shaheed Conference” would be held in Charsadda on June 18. The conference is expected to be attended by senior religious and political leaders from across the country.
To organize the event, the party also decided to convene meetings of all three tehsil-level bodies and the district general council in the coming days.
JUI leaders said several other important organizational decisions were also taken during the meeting and implementation on those decisions would begin soon.
