PROVINCE REPORT
ADDIS ABABA: The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has called on the international community to unequivocally condemn what it describes as unprovoked aggression by Eritrea, alleging that Eritrean troops have entered Ethiopian territory in the northern part of the country.
According to the Ethiopian government, Eritrean forces have crossed the border and taken up positions in areas including Rama, Sheraro, Badme and along the Adigrat-Zalambessa corridor, including Adigrat, a major urban centre.
Ethiopia described the alleged deployment as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and a breach of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter. It also termed the move unlawful interference in its internal affairs.
The Ethiopian government maintained that the country has the inherent right to defend itself against acts of aggression in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. It stressed that Ethiopia is the victim of the alleged aggression and should not be placed on an equal footing with the aggressor.
Ethiopia said it had exercised maximum restraint and consistently favoured peaceful means of resolving disputes. However, it stated that it would take necessary measures to protect its territory and people.
The government has demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all Eritrean forces from Ethiopian territory.
