Peshawar: The Inter-Club Weightlifting Championship has officially commenced in Peshawar with more than 40 athletes from eight clubs across the Peshawar region competing in six different categories.

The opening ceremony was held yesterday at the Gymnasium Hall of Peshawar Sports Complex. The event’s chief guest Advisor for Sports and Youth Affairs Taj Muhammad Tarand, formally inaugurated the championship by cutting the ribbon.

Among other notable attendees were Director General Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tashfeen Haider, ADC Relief Mehran, President of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Olympic Association Haroon Zafar, Secretary Zulfiqar Ali Butt, President of Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation Tariq Pervez, Ilyas Afridi, Amjad Khan, Assistant Director Finance Shah Faisal, Chief Coach Shafqat Ullah, Regional Sports Officer Kashif Farhan, President of the Provincial Weightlifting Association Shiraz Muhammad and Administrator of Peshawar Sports Complex Yousaf Afridi.

The three-day championship will feature competitions in the 55 kg, 65 kg, 73 kg, 81 kg, 89 kg and over 89 kg categories.

Addressing the ceremony, chief guest Taj Muhammad Tarand said that organizing sports competitions at the regional level is a positive development. He noted that such events not only provide young athletes with opportunities to showcase their talent but also help in discovering new talent.

He further stated that effective measures are being taken to promote sports in line with the vision of the founder of PTI. On this occasion, he also announced that all sports facilities at the Peshawar Sports Complex will be further modernized to provide better opportunities for youth.

During the ceremony guests were presented with traditional turbans while athletes delivered impressive demonstrations that were highly appreciated by the audience.
