ISLAMABAD – The Embassy of Ireland in Islamabad hosted a formal reception at the Serena Hotel to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day, attracting a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, diplomats, parliamentarians, and members of both the Pakistani and Irish communities.

The event underscored the deepening warmth and cooperation between Pakistan and Ireland, with attendees extending their greetings to Ambassador Mary O’Neil on the occasion.

Ambassador’s Role in Advancing Relations

Since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and the opening of Ireland’s Embassy in Islamabad last year, Ambassador Mary O’Neil—who presented her credentials to President Asif Ali Zardari in August 2024—has played a pivotal role in advancing bilateral ties. Her proactive diplomatic engagement has significantly contributed to strengthening government-to-government cooperation, as well as fostering meaningful business-to-business and people-to-people linkages between the two nations. Ambassador O’Neil’s efforts have been widely acknowledged in diplomatic and government circles, with the well-attended reception serving as a reflection of her growing stature and popularity. Her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to deepening Ireland–Pakistan relations have opened new avenues for collaboration across multiple sectors.

The ceremony was graced by Shaza Fatima Khawaja,  Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, as Chief Guest. In her remarks, she congratulated the Irish Ambassador and conveyed best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of Pakistan to the leadership and citizens of Ireland.

Welcoming Ambassador O’Neil, the minister highlighted Pakistan’s tradition of hospitality and expressed confidence that her tenure would further strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation. She reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its relationship with Ireland and emphasized interest in expanding collaboration in trade, tourism, healthcare, education, and environmental initiatives.

The celebration concluded with the playing of the national anthems of both nations and a ceremonial cake-cutting, symbolizing the spirit of friendship and the promising future of Ireland–Pakistan relations.
