Islamabad – In a significant diplomatic engagement, Romania’s senior leadership held a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, to discuss ongoing negotiations in Islamabad and the evolving situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
During the call, both sides exchanged views on regional security dynamics, particularly the implications of Middle East tensions on global stability. Romania underscored that the ongoing conflicts have far-reaching consequences, including rising energy prices and restricted access to essential commodities such as fertilizers, which are also impacting European markets.
The Romanian side expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s constructive mediation efforts, acknowledging Islamabad’s role—alongside regional partners—in supporting ceasefire initiatives and helping prevent a dangerous military escalation.
The discussion reflected cautious optimism regarding the fragile ceasefire, with both sides emphasizing the urgent need for continued dialogue between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz for uninterrupted naval traffic and restoring freedom of navigation to pre-conflict conditions were identified as immediate international priorities.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to diplomatic solutions, stressing the importance of coordinated efforts with international stakeholders, including the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Romania also highlighted its active engagement with European partners and broader international coalitions aimed at ensuring stability and maritime security in the region.
In addition to regional issues, the two sides agreed to sustain high-level dialogue to further strengthen bilateral relations between Romania and Pakistan. Enhancing trade cooperation remains a key priority, with bilateral trade currently standing at approximately $150 million.
A notable milestone in this regard is the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Port of Constanța and the Port of Karachi, marking a concrete step toward deepening maritime connectivity and boosting economic collaboration. The agreement reflects the shared commitment of both nations to expand trade routes and support sustainable economic growth.
