Peshawar: Allegations of irregularities, lack of transparency, and possible corruption in the “Hunar Mela” have taken a serious turn. In this regard, a joint delegation comprising leaders of Henari Tolna, Artists Action Foundation, Pakistan Directors, Producers, Writers and Artists Association, Mofkura, Pakistan Culture Tourism and Arts Organization, and Funkaar Ittehad met with the provincial political and government leadership.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of Culture, DG Culture and Tourism, and representatives of the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The delegation briefed the government in detail that the use of private companies and a contracting system in the organization of “Hunar Mela” has not only sidelined artists but has also raised serious questions regarding the transparent use of public funds.

The delegation maintained that planning and implementation of cultural activities without taking the artist community into confidence is not only a violation of the rights of the creative sector but is also damaging the credibility of the entire cultural sector.

Government officials listened to the delegation’s concerns seriously, requested one to two days to review the matter, and assured that the issue of “Hunar Mela” would be reviewed immediately, and the future course of action would be decided after addressing the concerns of artist organizations.

The delegation appreciated the timely response of the Chief Minister’s House and expressed hope that all demands of the artist community would be addressed on a priority basis so that transparency and trust in cultural activities could be restored.

The delegation included Arshad Hussain, Tariq Jamal, and Noshaba Bibi from drama and theatre; Dr. Rashid Ahmed Khan from music; Sajad Orakzai from painting; and Ashfaq Touro from directing.
